Decades of Investigative Experience

Before founding Whole Truth Investigations, Kaarin worked at the Minnesota Department of Human Rights investigating and providing legal analysis on claims of discrimination. During her four years at that State agency, Kaarin rose from investigator to Deputy General Counsel.

As an investigator, Kaarin directly interviewed dozens of witnesses and gathered evidence to evaluate allegations of discrimination made against employers, landlords, businesses, and schools. The goal of her work was always to find the whole truth – to learn what actually occurred and decide the case based solely on the facts.

As Associate and then Deputy General Counsel, Kaarin provided direction and analysis to the investigators. She researched and analyzed written determinations and internal appeals, directing investigations to ensure they had gathered and properly considered all relevant evidence. Kaarin was known by colleagues for her ability to find the facts from a neutral perspective without being swayed by emotion or irrelevant information. Kaarin left State employment in 2025 to open Whole Truth Investigations, PLLC, offering skilled investigations based upon decades of experience.

Before working for the State, Kaarin worked over twenty years at the county level as a felony criminal prosecutor. The focus of her prosecution career was addressing gender-based violence – investigating and prosecuting cases of domestic violence, stalking, sexual offenses, and trafficking. She led the investigations of hundreds of such cases, including interviewing countless victims/survivors of interpersonal violence. Having to prove such cases to meet the “beyond a reasonable doubt” standard for criminal convictions, Kaarin knows how to conduct a thorough investigation – looking to all possible sources for evidence and corroboration.

Indeed, Kaarin was entrusted to conduct a two-year exhaustive investigation into the county’s criminal legal response to reports of sexual violence, resulting in a written report to the county board with concrete recommendations.

As a prosecutor, Kaarin learned trauma-informed methods for interviewing witnesses. Using that approach in her work, she has since provided training on those methods for colleagues. With long experience interviewing people after traumatic experiences, Kaarin is comfortable working with people in such circumstances and brings a calm, reassuring presence to discussions of difficult events.

Keen Writing Ability

While working as a prosecutor, Kaarin was selected for assignment to the county prosecutor's appellate division. In that role, she sharpened her writing and editing skills and learned the art of appellate briefing. Taught by some of Minnesota’s most experienced appellate advocates, Kaarin is well-prepared to research and draft both trial memoranda and appellate briefs for lawyers.

Education

Kaarin is a graduate of the University of South Dakota undergraduate and School of Law. In law school, Kaarin wrote and published a law review article and served as the President of the Environmental Law Society.
